Something alive is a graphic novel by Jem Yoshioka. It is about a girl who is full blood Japanese yet like her parents, was born in New Zealand. People always tell her things about Japan that she already knows or is embarrassed to hear because she should have known this. She is confused and frustrated and does not want people to picture her as some genius or Samurai (In this part of the story the writer depicts a Samurai holding a sword alongside a chrome plated statue stating, “Or cast me in chrome as the product of some imaginary super future, I think this was a really good and smart move by the illustrator). She tries to be a normal citizen of New Zealand. She is confused as her features are ambiguous; her father has no choice but to have the look of his grandfather. She is sad, but proud to be Japanese. She can trace her ancestry back 1000 years none of which is Kiwi. Her accent was shaped to blend with the people around her. Her grandmother is proud to be Japanese and is also proud of her life in New Zealand. Her grandmother taught her that her heritage is something to be proud of. Something living in her. Something that is a good thing. Something, alive.

ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed reading your post to day, you have done an excellent job and you have explained this text well with detail, you have done a quality piece of work, well done. I couldn't have done this. I like how you included quotes from the text, like "cast me in chrome as the product of some imaginary superfuture" and the way you summarised it made it easy to read. This text depicts all the major events in the text. You could have made the storyboard longer and more detailed, but that isn't as important. Keep up this good work.
